Saturdays Are Better with Us.

This summer is East Avenue Gallery’s third year of Second Saturday events. They will be held from May through September. We are showcasing over twenty new artists with distinctive exhibitions for Akron and Northeast Ohio to get excited about. On May 13, our first show will open with trumpeter Theresa May. Ironic, right? She will be joined by her collaborative partner, Emanuel Wallace, who is a photojournalist for various Cleveland publications, including Cleveland Scene magazine. Both from the Cleveland area, May celebrates exposure of the underrepresented communities. Wallace complements this by documenting the unexpressed perspectives of Black pop culture.

Our May exhibition’s theme explores the cultural aesthetic of science and history through the African diaspora. This will be highlighted in our Second Saturday event entitled Afrofuturism: Black Lives Will Exist in the Future. As May describes, “Afrofuturism elicits stories of Blackness and embodies [May’s] personal style, creativity and aesthetic while highlighting Black women.” Local Akron composer Shanyse Strickland has assisted in the composition of this project. Her multi-media work “is meant to take you on an aural and visual journey.” Wallace photographed the visual pieces and will even be performing a live DJ set featuring May on the trumpet.

Inside East Ave’s gallery is their modest storefront market space, containing creative works of loyal artists and makers. One of many is Valerie Morris of Heart Kreations. This Cleveland-based wife and mother of two creates handmade resin cups, mugs, and other assorted gifts. East Ave Market is proud to house her latest custom pens with designs and functionality fit for every occasion. We hope to attract the eyes and minds of each visitor ensuring an unforgettable experience every second Saturday.
