Against Gravity: Remembering John Jackson
When John Jackson moved to Philadelphia following his graduation from the Cleveland Institution of Art, he worked as a carpenter while doing his sculpture. The two had intersected by the time he returned to Cleveland in 1992, and he expanded his assemblage work using urban debris as its raw material. He also
made collaborations with an experimental drawing group called NewCelle. Tragically Jackson was murdered in 2006, along with photographer Masumi Hayashi, at the studio building where they worked. AAWR has gathered together examples of his diverse practice, including abstract paintings, which push
toward 3D effects and watercolors of factory cityscapes.

Foot Squared
The intrepid Liz Maugans has once again corralled an enormous group of area
artists of all ages, genders, races, art backgrounds and styles—more than 200
of them—and set them to work on a common project, in this case, pieces that
measure 12 X 12 inches square. They jam the walls of Worthington Yards’ lobby
gallery space, with landscapes, abstracts and portraits in a variety of drawing
and painting media, and a surprising number of 3D assemblage works, many
seemingly inspired by Joseph Cornell’s famous boxes, jostling for attention.

Beyond Borders: The Art of Siona Benjamin
Benjamin’s work is a riot of influences and styles, befitting someone of her background. A Jewish immigrant from Mumbai who came to America in her 20s, she uses her art to explore issues of gender, immigration, race, culture and social change from a distinctly Jewish perspective, blending imagery drawn
from such diverse sources as pop art, Bollywood, Persian miniatures, Indian folk art, Hebrew manuscripts—and comic books.

Alexander Si: Fulfillment Center, Pt. 1
Conversations with her mother about their hometown of Fairfield, Alabama, which abuts Birmingham, drove the creation of Gardner’s multimedia, interdisciplinary work, laying bare the structures deliberately designed to enforce segregation in that town. She works with fragmented still and moving images to reveal the meanings of geography, meanings often glossed over or hidden on purpose. Si’s exhibit uses printmaking, sculpture, installation, performance and interactive activities to reveal the true cost of Amazon’s business model.

Egyptomania: Fashion’s Conflicted Obsession
The interest in Egyptian art, culture and design in Western cultures has risen and fallen over the years, based on invasions, diplomatic relations and archeological discoveries. This show, which fills the textile and Egyptian galleries, comprises more than 50 objects from CMA’s collection and clothing and jewelry on loan from around the world to tell a story spanning centuries that has raised issues of imperialism and, in recent years, cultural appropriation.

Finding Home: Four Artists’ Journeys
Rosa Leff: Made Home
Borderless: Artist Migration from the CMA Collection

With so much political focus on immigration, refugees and “the border,” CMA’s show Borderless is timely. The show features work from the permanent collection by first- and second-generation artists who arrived here from somewhere else for a variety of reasons, both forced and voluntary, to show the impact of displacement on the artists and their work, how they adapted and how they influenced American art. They include one of op art’s major figures, Julian Stanczak, displaced from his native Poland in World War II as a child, who traveled from Siberia to Iran to Uganda to London before settling in Cleveland where he spent his adult life. Jimmy Ernst, another artist in the show, escaped Nazi Germany, although his mother died at Auschwitz, while C.J. Yao emigrated from Taiwan.

Low expectations: Works of CHOD and Friends
CHOD is a Cleveland-based graphic artist with a penchant for dramatic, exaggerated comic book-style art that frequently features monsters and heroes. It’s heavy on action, violence, gore and pop-culture references (although he also does children’s books, so not all of it is R-rated). In other words, he’s the perfect fit for E11even2 gallery, which promotes affordable art that’s often pop-culture based. This show brings together an additional 15 artists with sympathetic styles to complement his work.
