Even if you haven’t heard of Creative Fusion, the Cleveland Foundation’s international artist residency program, I bet you’ve been touched by our visiting artists over the past nine years. Perhaps you viewed their work at an exhibit, participated in an artist-led workshop, or spotted the bright new murals transforming buildings in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood.

This spring’s Creative Fusion cohort takes the program to an entirely new level. [This month], we welcome a group of internationally celebrated Cuban artists for a historic cultural exchange with local Cleveland artists and the wider Cleveland community.

In the pages that follow, you’ll get to know each artist working in diverse disciplines including dance, photography, architecture, ballet, and printmaking. They will participate in a variety of projects over the next three month s, working closely with their Cleveland counterparts and in local host arts organizations.

We set the scene earlier this year when a group from Cleveland’s arts community visited Cuba to build stronger ties with arts organizations and artists there. On the trip, we saw Cubans innovating in the face of isolation, crafting stunning artwork with scarce supplies, and carefully preserving heritage amid widespread poverty.

Creative Fusion: Cuba Edition is a long time coming. The Cleveland Foundation established ties with Cuba over a decade ago because we recognized the country as a leading center for the arts. The dynamic is perfect because we have so much to learn from one another. We expect these recent innovative partnerships we forged in the arts to be just the beginning of a stronger and more fruitful relationship going forward.

La Fundación Cleveland presenta el programa Creative Fusion

Un encuentro entre Cleveland y La Habana

Incluso si a usted no le es muy familiar el nombre Creative Fusion -el programa de la Fundación Cleveland para la residencia de artistas internacionales-, es casi seguro que en los últimos nueve años los creadores foráneos que han visitado nuestra ciudad como parte de este programa no hayan pasado del todo desapercibidos: ya sea que haya visto sus trabajos en alguna exhibición de arte, o haya asistido a un taller ofrecido por alguno de los artistas, o tan solo se haya percatado de los atractivos nuevos murales que transforman los edificios del barrio Hingetown en Ohio City.

Esta primavera el programa Creative Fusion alcanza nuevos niveles. Este mes le damos la bienvenida a un grupo de reconocidos artistas cubanos en lo que constituye un intercambio cultural histórico entre la ciudad de Cleveland y toda la comunidad del Gran Cleveland, con Cuba.

En las siguientes páginas usted podrá conocer a cada uno de los artistas de diversas disciplinas que nos visitarán: desde la danza, la fotografía, la arquitectura, el ballet hasta la edición de libros. Durante los próximos tres meses, ellos participarán en diferentes proyectos en coordinación con colaboradores locales y con las instituciones de arte anfitrionas.

A principios de este año, un grupo de la comunidad artística de Cleveland visitó Cuba para sentar las bases para la concreción de este proyecto. El propósito del viaje era crear vínculos más sólidos con entidades de arte y artistas en Cuba. Durante nuestra estancia en la isla, fuimos testigos de la capacidad innovadora de los cubanos para enfrentar el aislamiento, para crear impresionantes obras de arte con materiales escasos y para preservar, de manera muy cuidadosa, su legado cultural en medio de una pobreza generalizada.

El capítulo Cuba del programa Creative Fusion es la concreción de un sueño de larga data. Desde hace más de una década la Fundación Cleveland estableció vínculos con Cuba porque reconocimos desde entonces el liderazgo de ese país en el mundo de las artes. La dinámica es perfecta porque tenemos mucho que aprender los unos de los otros. Confiamos en que estos recientes proyectos de colaboración en las artes sean solo el inicio de una relación mucho más fuerte y fructífera de cara al futuro.

Esperamos que usted pueda participar en las diferentes actividades que tendrán lugar mientras los artistas estén entre nosotros, ya sea asistiendo a sus actuaciones, o visitando sus exhibiciones y a las entidades de arte que los acogen.
