Cleveland native, San Francisco-based watercolorist Gary Bukovnik will be exhibiting new work in his home town this summer. This beautiful exhibition of watercolors, entitled Return of Spring will be on view at The Bonfoey Gallery, 1710 Euclid Avenue, in both our street and lower level galleries from May 20 through June 18, 2016.  An opening reception with the artist will be held Friday, May 20th, from 5 – 8pm.  There will also be a gallery talk, a painting demonstration with the artist, and a talk by a member of the Greater Cleveland Orchid Society, Saturday, May 21, beginning at 10:30 am.

Cleveland born and educated, Gary Bukovnik has lived and worked in San Francisco for over three decades. Working in watercolor, monotype, lithograph and metal sculpture, Bukovnik’s work fuses sensual vitality with fluid colorations, creating floral images of tremendous depth and intensity. From an early age Gary was fascinated by flowers. His grandmother had an extensive greenhouse outside of Cleveland that he was only allowed to enter under careful watch. Walking through the rows of flowers had a lasting and profound effect on Bukovnik, and from that moment on he was hooked. He may have strayed and tried his hand at landscapes when he first moved out to San Francisco but, like the sirens of Greek mythology calling his name, he was drawn back to flora and fauna. Gary Bukovnik is masterful at freezing a moment, creating time and space for a viewer to take in his composition. Flowers burst from their holdings and leap from the paper. Bukovnik has such a deft use of watercolor that his petals, stems, and leaves appear to radiate with an inner light. One can almost expect his paintings to have an aroma of amaryllis or camellias.

Bukovnik’s work is exhibited throughout galleries across America, and his work has been shown internationally in Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Germany, Thailand, Japan, China and most recently in Peru. His work is represented in diverse public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, The Brooklyn Museum in New York, and The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.
