Photographs by Barney Taxel Artist Statement: My photographs are representative of an ongoing visual questioning from a life immersed in practicing and teaching creative and commercial photography. The works come from years of personal image making- parallel careers of fine art, teaching and commercial photography. In my projects the common intention is to allow a creative visual voice to speak authentically, sincerely and directly to ideas, feelings and sensations of the human experience. The photographs I have made are of several photographic media- silver gelatin black and white prints from film, dye based color prints from film and archival pigment prints from both film scans and digital captures. My interests are the sensuality of a flower, the majesty of the landscape, the grace of the human figure, the astonishing design of a building or grouping of buildings in the cityscape, the perceived randomness of aging infrastructure and the inevitability of the body’s return to the earth. My photographs have this in common- the details and broad visual strokes of light and shadow inform my (and the audience’s) awareness and understanding of the world in movement and in stillness.
