New works by Cleveland Institute of Art faculty Sarah Kabot take over the Spotlight gallery space at Heights Arts this fall, with a public reception on Friday, September 16 from 6 to 9 p.m.
For the year 2015, Sarah Kabot collected all of the front-page sections from the Sunday edition of the New York Times. The events photographically documented in those pages reached a level of consequence deemed significant enough to be reported in a global newspaper of record. Despite this magnitude, less than one year later in some cases, most of the events depicted have since slipped out of the headlines and out of collective memory, overtaken by whatever events are seen as today’s dramatic news.
In her series, NYT 2015, Kabot collages together photographs of people printed in a single edition from that year, creating compositions that can look like ink stains, scribbles or Rorschach blots. The delicate cutouts encourage viewers to get up close to the artwork. Can this careful looking jog a viewer’s memory? What were these moments in the recent past that were so easy to forget? Will the monumental events of today prove just as fleeting? We hope to see you for the opening reception.
