Sarah Kabot’s installations, sculptures, and collages respond to systems commonly believed to provide social and political stability but are inherently fallible: print journalism, memorials, architectural infrastructure. Her works join fractured photographic imagery with delicately manipulated and draped paper constructions, reflecting both the flimsiness of and the inevitable distortions that occur in popular recollection of significant public events. In the most recent newspaper-based work, Kabot cuts away sections of journalistic images from one page revealing counterpart images or text on the next visible page. This spontaneous combination results in a collapsing of space between events, geographic locations and cultures. Marked only by date, the viewer pieces together contexts and content, decoding world events through dislocated images.

Kabot’s work has shown nationally and abroad, at institutions including The Suburban (IL), SPACES Gallery (OH), Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MI), the Akron Museum of Art (OH), the Museum of Contemporary Art (OH), the Drawing Center (NY), the Peabody Essex Museum (MA), and Tegnerforbundet in Norway.

She is currently Professor and Chair of the Drawing Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio.
