Near the corner of W. 25th and Denison in the Brooklyn Center neighborhood, art not only lives but is nurturing creativity, pride and joy. Art House’s most popular classes this season offer opportunities to experience a variety of techniques for creating with clay.

After learning and practicing some fundamentals, artists of all ages can throw pots, bowls, vases, and mugs on the wheel. Other classes will feature hand-building techniques. Participants will work with various clays and glazes, while learning about form and surface design and kiln firing.Projects include wind chimes, luminaries, and little skulls for Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead).

 

For those seeking a more unique experience, seasoned ceramicist John Klassen will lead a Raku workshop. Raku, which was developed in 16^th century Japan, involves building a ceramic pot by hand, glazing it, and baking it at a high temperature in an outdoor kiln. Variations in surface appearances after firing make the process unique and exciting – thus the name Raku, which means joy or happiness.
