Art House: Parallel Journeys

Andrew Easterling assists a camper with the Isaac Tower construction during the Trash to Treasure Camp

Pulling myself away from the grip of the day-to-day offers time to observe and experience all of the Art House activity and energy that happens in and beyond our own studio. Surprises always unfold, as do unexpected associative leaps.

After the Urban Bright exhibition comes down, the studio returns to normal: pottery wheels, tables and chairs are once more set out, ready for the labor of making to begin again. Camp time arrives. Our teaching artists present a whole range of topics and projects that inspire and challenge participants. This summer the campers learned about balance, movement, insects, constructing traditional and modernist (or dystopian) buildings, and more. The summer months also bring interns, from different programs and schools, who want to learn about Art House and gain experience for stepping into a staff position. They tackle tasks, assist the artists and students, and complete their own creative projects that truly benefit the organization.

One summer afternoon while observing the progress on a complex project, I saw parallels emerging between our program participants and interns. Through the making they question, discover, and do things they have never done before. They stretch their abilities and grow.
