Art House Considers The World Around Us

Urban Bright photography program at Wilbur Wright Elementary: The Visible and Hidden.

During the snowy winter months, we reflect on the work happening within and around us. As program director, I see firsthand the transformative impact of the teaching artists in our communities and schools. This year, we’re partnering with over thirteen schools and organizations to deliver Urban Bright Arts-in-Education programs across Cleveland.
At Wilbur Wright Elementary, seventh graders collaborated with photographer Gina Washington to explore what’s visible and what’s hidden, through the camera lens. Students learned DSLR techniques, experimented with cyanotypes, and developed their artistic vision. Washington shared that while some students refined their way of seeing, others embraced the joy of exploration.

Urban Bright at West Side Community House Sisterhood After School: Story Telling.

High school students at Garrett Morgan School of Leadership and Innovation re-engaged with printmaking under the guidance of printmaker Rebekah Wilhelm. The fall residency introduced silkscreening and culminated in a collaborative installation inspired by the natural world. This work will be showcased in Art House’s Annual Urban Bright Exhibition.
At the West Side Community House Sisterhood After-School Program, students worked with felt artist Rahamel Hughes to create a multidisciplinary story combining dance, poetry, and costume design. This fostered a supportive, creative environment that students enjoyed.
