CAN Triennial Exhibition Prize Partners Announced

Artist Wadsworth Jarrell, a founder of AFRIcobra, was winner of the inaugural Mansfield Art Center Exhibition Prize. His exhibition in Mansfield took place in Summer 2019. Cover art by Wadsworth Jarrell, design by JoAnn Dickey.

During the Spring 2022 CAN Journal launch party at Future Ink Graphics (FIG) at the Pivot Center in Clark-Fulton neighborhood of Cleveland, Collective Arts Network announced partners for the 2022 CAN Triennial Exhibition Prizes.

Collective Arts Network is an organization that advances the visual art sector in Northeast Ohio through collaborative projects, especially communication, via the print quarterly CAN Journal and other outlets. CAN’s variety of projects all leverage relationships for mutual benefit, and in that  sense the exhibition prizes are emblematic of the organization’s work.

CAN Triennial Exhibition Prize partners each agree to send a curator to the Triennial, view the exhibits, and from them choose an artist to give a solo show in their venue in the next three years.  This brings curators from regional museums to visit 18 Cleveland art venues presenting the exhibits, and consider the works and the artists who made them.

CAN Triennial’s curatorial team—Kristin Rogers (Progressive Collection, SPACES), Thea Spittle (Independent curator) Michael Gutiérrez (2020 Schaaf, Hildebrandt Collective), Darius Steward (artist) and the students of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Currently Under Curation program, under the leadership of Sabine Kretzschmar—have selected 125 artists for the show, all from 7 Northeast Ohio counties: Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Summit, Portage, Lake, and Geauga. The CAN Triennial Exhibition Prize winners will be chosen from those artists.

The inaugural CAN Triennial Exhibition Prizes in 2018 facilitated regional museum exhibits by some of the most accomplished artists active in Northeast Ohio, including Christine Mauersberger at ArtNeo, David King at BAYarts, Amy Casey at Canton Museum of Art (Exhibition in Summer 2022), Wadsworth Jarrell at the Mansfield Art Center, and Rebecca Cross at Massillon Museum.

The 2022 CAN Triennial Exhibition Prize Partners, and respective curators are:

Akron Art Museum, Senior Curator Jared Ledesma

The Butler Institute of American Art, Liz Hicks-Skeels
