Cleveland Print Room Presents Peer Show Winners

Christine Zuercher, Distant Transmissions

The Cleveland Print Room presents Dead Wax & Distant Transmissions, featuring 2020 Print Room Peer Show award winners Ilenia Pezzaniti and Christine Zuercher.

Ilenia Pezzaniti, a multidisciplinary artist, describes her work in this show as a view into her subjects’ lives during quarantine. “In May of 2020, three months into the lockdown, I gave twelve people living alone one disposable camera.” The participants’ photos, taken in a two-week period, are displayed with Pezzaniti’s portraits of them, along with her own photos and notes made while she was living alone. “As I reflect back on this novel year, I think of a [phonograph] needle tracking dead wax: the record still spinning, humming along a locked groove, waiting to be flipped.”

Christine Zuercher, an astronaut and member of the American Interterrestrial Society, focuses her research on shortwave radio, the Space Race, and transmission technologies, using interdisciplinary and alternative photographic processes. Zuercher says, “Distant Transmissions explores ways in which the subjectivity of photography can be used to rewrite and reimagine a history that includes the powerful role of the female explorer. The handmade prints in this series are grainy, out-of-focus, abstract landscapes. The aesthetics of the images in this body of work, the in-between nature of the photographs, demonstrate a lack of literal representation—the layering, covering up, and altering of memories through process.” Using gum bichromate, Zuercher creates an obscured, otherworldly aesthetic. Distant Transmissions examines the history of the human experience through photographs, objects, performance, and sound.
