Heights Arts presents Emergent, and more

Davon Brantley, Baby in Wash

Heights Arts’ gallery, 2175 Lee Road, is excited to present the third iteration of the well-received exhibition Emergent, which shines a light on artists who have recently graduated from area colleges and universities. First organized in 2015, Emergent celebrates the strength of the Northeast Ohio region as a training ground for significant artists of tomorrow. Numerous artists who appeared in previous Emergent exhibitions at Heights Arts are now well into established careers as working artists in the Cleveland area and elsewhere, including Jerry Birchfield, Abbey Blake, Robert Coby, Amber Ford, Matthew Gallagher, David Masters, Nathan Prebonick, and Rachel Shelton.

For Emergent 2019, the Heights Arts exhibition community team selected eleven artists who create in a variety of media, from institutions that include the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University, the University of Akron, and Oberlin College. The artists are Emily Brannan, Davon Brantley, Kimberly Chapman, Kylie Demkowicz, Sydney Givens, Alyson Hollobaugh, Danielle Mužina, Alex Overbeck, Noelle Richard, Jeni Stovicek, and Yskandar.

About halfway through the run of every exhibition, Heights Arts organizes an accompanying program called Ekphrastacy: Artists Talk + Poets Respond, which combines short talks by artists in the exhibition with readings by area poets of poems written specifically in response to the works on view in the show. This always-inspiring event is slated for Thursday, May 23 at 7:00pm for the Emergent show. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, June 9.

Overlapping the run of that exhibition is a spotlight show featuring Karen Sandstrom, who offers a group of illustrations that focus on animals and people’s relationships with them. Her work is on view through June 23.

Coming up later in the summer is a group show, Call + Response, running June 14 to July 28 and featuring photographs by Christina Bock, sculpture by Mona Kolesar, mixed-media drawings by Nadya Scheiner, and encaustics by Dawn Tekler. The next spotlight, opening June 28, brings works by printmaker Jennifer Leach and runs through August 11.

Finally, from August 2 to 25, Heights Arts presents the first in what is planned to be an annual offering: a short exhibition curated by its two high school interns, a junior and a senior from Cleveland Heights High School who spend the school year working with the Heights Arts exhibition community team. This year’s interns have been graduating senior Mia Miller and junior Ava Collyer.
