CAN Editor Michael Gill Honored at BAYarts
BAYarts will honor CAN Journal’s co-founder and executive director at the annual Moondance Benefit on September 9. Each year, BAYarts honors an individual who has contributed to northeast Ohio’s cultural landscape in a transformative and lasting way. Past honorees have included CPAC President & CEO Tom Schorgl, Liz Maugans of Zygote Press and Brian Zimmerman, CEO of Cleveland Metroparks.
Some words from a few fans about Mike:
“Mike Gill is the executive director/editor/publisher of Cleveland’s most reliably creative arts magazine, committed to providing an open platform for social engagement.”
—Bruce Checefsky, curator, artist, CAN contributor
“Michael Gill has done the impossible, marshaling virtually all of our area’s diverse art organizations and museums of visual art under one banner. The first issue in 2012, printed on inexpensive paper, had these words printed on its cover image: Let’s Make Art Work because we CAN! Five years later it’s clear that’s exactly what Michael Gill and his many allies have accomplished—a working model for arts coverage in northern Ohio.”
—Douglas Max Utter, artist and CAN contributor
“Mike Gill has the snoop on the art scoop because he likes the rigor and research of what makes our artists, art organizations and the regional arts scene tick. He’s a reporter and op-ed guy at heart, and that work, along with his vast knowledge of art history and being an artist himself has taken him and CAN to the heights that none of us could ever have imagined!”
—Liz Maugans, executive director Zygote Press, CAN co-founder
Moondance is held on the BAYarts campus under the stars and tents with local eateries, local brews, wine, bonfires, auction and absolutely no speeches. The event is always a sell-out; advance tickets are recommended. Details www.BAYarts.net.
