Mary Urbas is passionate about deepening the bonds between area artists and broadening awareness of the vast and vibrant arts community found in greater Cleveland. So she works with other galleries to unite and curate similar shows, thereby sharing the promotion, amplifying the reach and, in the process, providing a spotlight on the smaller studios that really deserve more attention. What started out small with a few locations and artists has grown considerably with fingers that have stretched beyond the local realm into most of Northeast Ohio.

This March, Urbas is again championing the initiative to engage other venues in dedicating shows to female artists and their art. Her show at The Gallery of Lakeland titled Celebrate Women’s History Month “from Woman X … Created by women, of women and about women” is in its tenth year. The gallery will host more than three dozen national, regional and local artists displaying a variety of media including oil, acrylic, drawing, photography, textiles, jewelry, enamels, lamp work glass, glass mosaic, sculpture, assemblage, ceramics and mixed media. Numerous other galleries in the greater Cleveland area are also participating in celebrating talented women artists, and Urbas is compiling a directory of the exhibitions which can be found at lakelandcc.edu/gallery. Per Urbas, “The viewing public can spend the month of March experiencing the joy and excitement of discovering new artists and galleries. There are so many women artists living, working and showing their art in Northeast Ohio. This wealth of resources is inspiring!”

As in past years, The Gallery at Lakeland will team up with the Lakeland Women’s Center to honor strong female role models in the community with the Women of Achievement Awards. The awards ceremony takes place at 2 pm Sunday, March 26, in Lakeland’s Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center, followed immediately by the from Women X artist reception in the gallery. Both events are free and open to the public.

Lakeland Community College is located just off the I-90 and Route 306 exit in Kirtland, Ohio.
