Gallery+ Meditations

Gallery+Eiskamp_Pendulous-02

This Fall, Gallery+ is pleased to present the work of two local artists, Grant Cleveland and Joshua Eiskamp.

Grant Cleveland’s work will be on display from September 16 through October 21, 2016. All of Cleveland’s art is personal. His paintings fall into a new category of paintings called abstract symbolism.  While they are definitely abstract, everything signifies something. Not only do the lines and objects they create mean something, the colors mean something, and the textures mean something. What is really unique about Cleveland’s art is that he writes the meanings of the paintings so the viewer can understand what everything symbolizes and means to him.

“Painting brings things to light that are part of our lives that I never put words to,” says Cleveland.  “Painting brings out the meanings of nuances and custom, it inspires and really generates epiphanies about how life works for me.  These deep philosophical revelations do not come to me when I am not painting.  But when I paint, it is like meditation, and it all spills out.”

From October 21 through November 18, 2016, Gallery+ will present work from Joshua Eiskamp’s Pendulous Series. This series of paintings focuses on the spatial interplay between vertical lines suspended from a horizontal bar and layers of painterly color field. Intentionally meditative and immersive the use of charcoal, graphite and acrylic paint glazes urge the viewer to look deeper into the implied depth of the surface and float amongst the line and paint. The imagery floats on the surface of hand crafted stretcher frames and hand stretched canvases. By design, the visible staples and edges emphasize the canvas as a utilitarian foundation serving as a platform for the rich surface of drawn line and paint strokes. The ultimate intent is to create a surface that invites the viewer to dive in, enjoy the materials, and relax.

As always, you can enjoy the works of our regular artists: sculptor, Leslie Edwards Humez; oil painter, Diane Hoeptner; photographer, Zackary Hoon; oil painter, Tricia Kaman; and watercolor painter, Ted Lawson.
