Northern Ohio Illustrators Society
Members of the Northern Ohio Illustrators Society are collaborating on two projects this year — the annual exhibition of members work and a cookbook featuring lovingly illustrated recipes.
All Things Cleveland
“All Things Cleveland,” a show of new work by NOIS members, is on view Sept. 9 through Oct. 3 at The Art Gallery in Willoughby. The annual member exhibition showcases personal projects created by artists who typically illustrate for books, magazines, print and online ads, product packaging and more.
“The show almost always has a theme,” said NOIS President Ron Hill. “This year, we wanted to reflect the attention that the city of Cleveland is getting, both through being the home of the Republican National Convention and also through the expansion of its cultural scene.”
Cleveland has always been ripe as a muse for artists and cartoonist. NOIS members’ response to the exhibition theme reflects not just landmarks and problems — although some of the work does that, too — but a deep affection for the rust belt landscape and neighborhoods, Hill said.
The show will include drawings and paintings done both digitally and traditionally, sculpture, sketchbook pages and more.
Cooking It Up in Cleveland
Debuting at the members’ show in September will be Cooking It Up in Cleveland, an 80-page illustrator showcase featuring NOIS members’ favorite recipes. Each recipe has been artist-tested and approved, but the point is really to demonstrate the range of styles and techniques used by the dozens of participating artists.
“Thanks in large part to the Internet, as well as the explosion of foodie culture, food illustration has become huge over the last few years,” says NOIS Vice President Karen Sandstrom. “We were looking around for a way to promote the talent of NOIS member and realized we should give them something to have fun with.
“At the same time, the challenge is to show off the kind of work you’re known for or would like to be known for. So an illustrated recipe can really be a children’s book illustration, or a political cartoon, or a landscape. It’s all about the creativity to bring to the project.”
The spiral-bound book, $10, will be available at The Art Gallery in Willoughby, from NOIS members and through the illustrators’ website, www.nois.com.
