Art Therapy Studios Renovated for Access
Art Therapy Studio has been renovated with updates that reflect our continued dedication to providing a therapeutic art environment, and support for artists of all abilities. Space has been designed to create a calm and inspiring environment. In addition, the physical space has been designed to accommodate those using adaptive devices for mobility, including adjustable tables to accommodate different size wheelchairs, chairs that provide support, and space for easy moving with adaptive devices such as walkers.
The renovations were made possible from the generous donation of founder George Streeter. Dr. Streeter was inspired to start ATS with partner Mickie McGraw, who both used art during childhood illnesses for coping and self expression.
In addition to the updated studio, three new classes will be added focused on self expression.
In the “Memory Quilt Class,” participants will create a lap quilt or wall hanging to remember a special person or event in their life. Group members will gather to share stories and create a special memory quilt. Beginners and experienced quilters are welcome.
“Mindful Crochet and Knitting Experience” uses traditional forms of creating while learning and practicing relaxation and mindfulness techniques. Whether you would like to learn how to knit or crochet, or are already experienced, this group will provide a calm, peaceful atmosphere to create.
“Around The World in 11 Weeks” will take participants on a creative journey around the world exploring iconic cultural symbols that used in art making Did you know the Egyptians believed the Lotus Flower represented the sun, creation and rebirth? We’ll visit Africa, Asia, Australia, North and South America and Europe through art. Focus on your own cultural background or another, bring in your ideas and personal treasures to share and transform them into art objects. Painted and paper products, woven and printed strategies, masks, clay tiles, quilt pieces, art books and more. Explore the Global Village through the arts!
