The Gallery at Lakeland spearheads regional showcase of women’s art as “From Woman” exhibit enters 7th year
The Gallery at Lakeland will once again celebrate March as Women’s History Month with an art exhibit “From Woman VII: Created by women, of women, and about women,” which runs from March 2 – 28. Declared by Congress in 1987, National Women’s History Month brings awareness to women’s contributions in society.
This year’s show features the work of 34 female artists from across Northeast Ohio, Missouri, New Mexico, New York and Oklahoma, and represents a variety of media including: oil, acrylic and encaustic painting, drawing and pastels, photography, jewelry, enamels, digital art, bronze and ceramic sculpture, assemblage art, and mixed media.
As in past years, the Gallery at Lakeland will team up with the Lakeland Women’s Center to co-host a program that celebrates strong, female role models in the community, the “Women of Achievement” awards. The awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m. in Lakeland’s Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center, followed immediately by the “From Woman” exhibit artist reception in the gallery.
2014 marks the seventh year that Gallery Coordinator and Exhibition Curator Mary Urbas presents this unique, women-focused exhibition. In an effort to spread the word about women in art, she has spearheaded an effort to engage other galleries throughout Northeast Ohio to also curate a show dedicated to female art and artists during the month of March. All events are free and open to the public.
Call for artists
The Gallery at Lakeland invites local and regional artists to submit artworks for consideration to be included in the 5th Annual May Show Juried Art Exhibition slated for the first week of May 2014. Throughout the past four years, the gallery has given $16,000 in cash awards. The “Best in Show” prize of $1,500 is typically known as the best cash prize in the region.
