Of Scenes

Opening Reception: June 21, 2013 from 7-10 PM

1point618 Gallery is proud to present works of George Schroeder in Of Scenes. The exhibition brings together a series of non-objective paintings—which investigate materiality, shape, color, form and line–with a series of playful collage works on paper. Schroeder talks about the paintings and the collage pieces as, “what seems to be the work of two different people.”

Becoming more bold in his painting process, Schroeder writes, “My recent paintings are improvised, to some degree, over a scaffold of vertical and horizontal lines. I put something down and respond to it, trying one thing and another until I sense where the painting wants to go. Then I continue until I get it there. I rarely use a brush, instead I lay on the paint with drywall knives or cardboard squeegees. Working this way creates a surface that is simultaneously tough and tender, and gives emphasis to the surface in a way that I find satisfying.”

Schroeder’s interest in collage was initially derived from his love of pure design and by his deliberate eschewing of storyline. Each of Schroeder’s collages is an amalgam of cut, torn, layered, locked, flipped, and refocused fragments that reveal and conceal a host of tales. He writes, “Collage is painting by other means. Even though the collages may carry fragments of evocative imagery, they aren’t intended to tell stories or make a point. Making them, I am concerned mostly with such issues as balance, rhythm, line, surface and space. I provide the picture; you supply the story.”

The Incredible Brightness of Seeing

Opening Reception: August 23, 2013 from 7-10 PM

Networking usually involves connections among people, but in this body of work the connections manifest themselves between places and things. Since our visual culture constantly bombards us with images, it is a distinct challenge to create combinations of things heretofore unrelated. In such reincarnations, new worlds of wonder may materialize as the element of surprise is ever present. Interconnectedness at times may be based on formal concerns, while at other times similar themes or small details might unite the work. Hopefully these tapestries, woven of strange combinations and altered photographs, will provoke a new way of seeing and looking.
