KSU Center for Visual Arts Presents Line By Line

Samantha Bittman, untitled, acrylic on hand-woven textile, 2020.
LINE BY LINE features the work of seven textile artists from around the US: Erin M. Riley, Samantha Bittman, Crystal Gregory, Diedrick Brackens, Kira Dominguez Hultgren, Mark Barrow and Sarah Parke. Curated by Kent State University School of Art’s Textiles Professor Janice Lessman-Moss, the exhibition will also feature visiting artist talks by Kira Dominguez Hultgren (January 21) and Crystal Gregory (March 11). There will also be a full-color catalog available with an essay by noted writer and curator Glenn Adamson.

Mark Barrow and Sarah Parke, Reweave 2.2, hand dyed linen, 46 X 34 inches, 2016.
“The works presented in this exhibition are tactile constructions that reveal a range of images and abstractions built on a foundation of method and order. In practice, the compositions unfold line by line revealing cells of color and texture that establish a field of shapes and patterns orchestrated through the unique sensibility and skillful touch of each artist. Although varied in form and content this group of works reflects an exciting range of perspectives manifested through the process of weaving,” states Lessman-Moss in the description of the exhibit.

Erin M. Riley, No Such Luck, wool and cotton tapestry, 72 X 48 inches, 2017
Many of the artists included in the show have recently found themselves featured on the international art scene. Known for her erotic and sex-positive feminist compositions, Erin Riley’s solo show at P P O W Gallery in New York City was featured in several publications, including Juxtapoz, ARTnews, Hyperallergic and the New York Times. Diedrick Brackens, known for intricately woven textiles that speak to the complexities of Black and queer identity in the US, had a solo show at the New Museum in 2019 and was featured in Cultured Magazine’s 30 under 35. Samantha Bittman had a solo exhibition in spring 2021 in Ronchini Gallery in London, UK. Bittman is best known for creating works that feature a “brilliant” amalgamation of weaving and painting.
LINE BY LINE is organized by the School of Art Collection and Galleries at Kent State University with support from the Ohio Arts Council.
