The Sculpture Center Presents Internationally-recognized Artist Edra Soto

The Sculpture Center (TSC) and Chicago-based, Puerto Rican artist Edra Soto are exploring the Greater Cleveland Latinx community’s stories of migration, displacement and cultural memory through two exhibitions in TSC: a permanent outdoor public artwork in Clark-Fulton where the city’s largest Puerto Rican community resides, and a collaborative journal.
La Casa de Todos | Everyone’s Home is a presentation of architectural designs from Soto’s native Puerto Rico that reimagines the marquesinas (porches) which frequently house public gatherings and moments for celebration. Woven in the screens are photographs that Cleveland residents have shared to tell their own stories of home.
The work of eleven Cleveland artists, primarily Latinx, will be displayed alongside Soto’s in La Casa Compartida | The House We Share. The exhibition, curated by Soto, Grace Chin, and Héctor Castellanos Lara, reflects on familial relationships and features self-portraits of those who become witnesses to our lives and, in turn, bring life to the places we hold dear to our hearts. The artists featured are Ewuresi Archer, Nathalie Bermudez, Orlando Caraballo, Laura Camila Medina, James Negron, Maya Peroune, Dante Rodriguez, Oliver C. St. Clair, Ariel Vergez, Otelia Vergez, and Gina Washington.

La Distancia | The Distance is a permanent, sculptural outdoor bus shelter that will be installed in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood and serve as an RTA bus stop. Situated off West 25th Street at the entrance of MetroHealth, the bus shelter is modeled after those commonly found in Puerto Rico, and pays tribute to those in the neighborhood with a familiar piece of home. La Distancia marks Soto’s first major Midwest project outside of Chicago, as well as TSC’s largest commission to date. A companion printed and digital journal archives the work of twenty Cleveland multigenerational writers and artists, primarily Latinx, who reflect upon home amidst feelings of displacement.
The exhibitions are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Joyce Foundation: TSC and Soto were recipients of a Joyce Award in 2024.
