Susan Danko & Mary Fischer
Danko is a painter and Fischer is a sculptor, but in this show, the two Cleveland artists focus on a similar subject: their relationship to the built and natural environments. Fischer’s ceramic sculptures suggest small buildings worn by
the effects of time, some based on ones she’s seen in real life and others found in books. Danko’s paintings are based on observation of the local landscape and how it changes with seasons, the weather and the light.

Transfiguration: Rachel Libeskind and the Tiffany Window A Tiffany glass window depicting the Transfiguration of Christ is displayed with new work by contemporary multimedia artist Libeskind, created specifically to respond to it. It’s informed by Libeskind’s youth visiting churches across Europe and acquiring knowledge and understanding of their traditional imagery. She relates the transfiguration to the chrysalis in which a caterpillar is transformed into a butterfly, using it as a metaphor for spiritual transformation.

Martin Puryear: Nexus
Sculptor Martin Puryear, who is now 84, has had a long and influential career as an abstract sculptor, creating evocation forms, largely from wood, which he considers the most “alive” of materials. He’s lived all over the world, imbibing
influences and has achieved extraordinary success, especially for an African American artist, with public art commissions in New York, Los Angeles and now, the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. This exhibit, co-organized by CMA and
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is the most comprehensive showing of his work in a couple of decades.
