Described as a participatory, evolving sound sculpture, it features salvaged band instruments hung from the ceiling. Gallery visitors can interact with an EEG brain monitor that translates brainwaves into live musical compositions in keeping with the exhibit’s theme of injury, healing, and labor. An adjoining gallery will feature materials that provide context and background for the show, while on alternate Saturdays area performers will be in the gallery to activate the exhibit based on prompts from Parker.

Tigran Hamasyan: Manifeste
Tigran Hamasyan is a jazz pianist, but he’s not STRICTLY a jazz pianist. The Armenian musician/composer draws a range of elements into his sound, including progressive rock, heavy metal and Armenian folk music, as well as elements of improvision that make jazz distinctive. Winning first place at the Montreux and Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz competitions while in his teens (he’s now 38), he released his debut album at age 17 and has since won international acclaim in the jazz community. He’s now touring with his newly released album Manifest, accompanied by two fellow Armenians, drummer Arman Mnatsakanyan and keyboard player Yessaï Karapetian, and Illinois native Evan Marien on bass.

Barbie as Inspiration: curated by Mary Urbas
More than a dozen local artists join respected curator/artist Mary Urbas in this show that explores the meanings and possibilities suggested by the iconic Barbie doll. To Urbas the unrealistic body type was less significant than the many roles and opportunities the doll took on: traveling the world, living every lifestyle, becoming everything from fashion model to presidential candidate. Her own contribution is based on her cousin Eric’s Barbie which was accidentally “kidnapped” (and later returned) when her mother packed her in her suitcase after a trip to California. She created a kidnapping scenario complete with ransom note which is part of this show. Her cousin Eric died of AIDS in the 80s so she will donate part of her own sales proceeds to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in his memory.

Manet & Morisot
CMA’s next major show looks at the relationship between two artists who worked at the dawn of modernist painting, the first major show devoted to their interactions. Edouard Manet’s work is considered the launching pad for the impressionist movement, and Berthe Morisot one of its few women artists. The two were friends, colleagues and collectors of each other’s work, and Morisot married Manet’s brother. The exhibit comprises 36 paintings and six drawings and prints that depict their different approach to similar subjects, including Parisian women, which Manet saw as objects of visual and sexual appeal and Morisot painted with an understanding of what it felt like to BE a woman.

Kent Monkman: History is Painted by the Victors
Monkman, a Manitoba Cree artist, who works in painting, film, video, performance and installation, is known for his startling reinterpretations of classical historical painting, taking the genre’s familiar conventions and applying them to modern content that references oppression, appropriation, colonization, and shifting identities, as he mixes past and present, real and fantastical, actual people with imaginary creations. Much of his art revolves around a character he created called Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, a shape-shifting, two-spirit alter ego through which Monkman communicates his complicated world view.

Milwaukee-based artist Geo Rutherford shares an obsession with many Northeast Ohioans: the health and welfare of the Great Lakes. Her printmaking practice, which also includes artist books and mixed-media installations, explores the lakes’ evolving conditions, its threats from climate change, industrial and agricultural pollution and invasive species. She incorporates lake detritus into her diverse work which includes screen printing, etching, block printing and lithography, and cuts up and repurposes her own work to create a sense of a watery world in flux—and in danger.

William Sommer Retrospective
William Sommer (1867-1949), who trained as a lithographer and lived in Summit County, was one of the key artists of the “Cleveland School” of early-mid 20th-century artists who worked in Northeast Ohio. His long career was diverse, much of it focused on rural scenes. His 1933 mural, The City in 1833, is still on view at the downtown Cleveland Public Library. He was also a co-founder of Cleveland’s legendary Kokoon Arts Club, which promoted modern art. WOLFS is mounting what it calls a “long overdue” retrospective. It’s based on a 60-year collection owned by art historian/collector Martin Lerner who came to know Sommer’s work when Lerner was at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The exhibition will include a publication and programming, such as tours and lectures.
