From WOMAN 18 in 2025: Created by women, of women & about women, curated by Mary Urbas
Mary Urbas curated this lavish show of diverse work by women artists, most from Northeast Ohio and the surrounding region, for many years before the gal- lery closed last year. This year she’s split the show in three parts: in Cleveland’s western suburbs at BAYarts (March 14–April 13), at Painesville’s Lake Erie College (through April 3) and this one at 78th Street Studios’ Understory Gallery. Meryl Engler and Rita Montlack
Woodcut prints, photography and installation are the basis of this show by two experienced area artists who both have detailed processes for sorting, layering and careful color selection that add up to distinctive im- agery. Nature, architecture, figures and pop culture appear in their works, filtered through their personal perceptions. Engler contributes oversized woodcuts that describe relationship, landscapes and human presence in the environment in her show The Constant Urge to Walk All Night. Meanwhile, Montlack’s work reflects a recent fascination with artificial intelligence; her show AI: Artificial Insanity, looks at how intelligence and insanity conflict and coexist.

A Brush with Chaos & the Unpredictable: Works by Sean Jason Kelly
Kelly’s usually precise work takes a turn in this show, as the artist leans on the chaos of nature for his imagery, creating canvases that reflect the natural world’s tension between wildness and harmony. He explores visually how nature arrives at an equilibrium between chaos and control, to arrive at a sort of resilience. Each piece incorporates both structure and spontaneity, reflecting the artist’s journey towards understanding and embracing his own mental chaos.

Karamu Artists Inc: Printmaking, Race, and Community
Today, Karamu House, founded in 1915, is mostly known as one of the country’s foremost presenters of Black theater. But in the 1930s, it launched an active printmaking workshop where members, such as the young poet Langston Hughes, could come and experiment with varying techniques and themes of interest to the Black community. It produced a cluster of widely recognized Black printmakers who were part of a 1942 travelling exhibition. This show places their work in the context of the wider American art scene of the 1930s and ’40s, with more than 50 prints created by the Karamu member
group, featuring both items in the museum’s collections and significant loans.

Eileen Woods: Death by Gun
The artist has created 100 framed, wood-burned, hand-embroidered Prismacolor portraits of gun victims, including families and toddlers, to highlight to ubiquity and ordinariness of gun deaths, whether accidental, the result of personal beefs, or caused by mental illness or racism. She aims to draw attention to the individual gun deaths that don’t result in headlines, whose victims are grieved only by their families and friends.
