SPACES Presents Artist-in-Residence, Yelaine Rodriguez

Wearable works of SPACES artist-in-residence, the Afro-DominicanYork artist and sculptor, Yelaine Rodriguez.

SPACES is pleased to invite you to the culminating exhibition by our summer artist-in-residence, Yelaine Rodriguez, an Afro-DominicanYork interdisciplinary artist and scholar who focuses on wearable art, sculptures, photography, video installation, and performance. For her exhibition at SPACES, Rodriguez will present a reimagining of her pre-existing work, Miss Doc, a video performance art piece that delves into migration patterns, race relations, and women’s rights during the Reconstruction Era. It tells the story of Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser, born in 1850, who was the fourth Black woman to become a licensed physician in the United States and the first woman doctor and pediatric specialist in the Dominican Republic. Sited in The Oracle Gallery, this presentation of Miss Doc will include a multi-channel video, photographs, and a sculptural installation with archival material.

Additionally, in The George Gund Gallery, Rodriguez will premiere a short film that explores Northeast Ohio’s role in the Underground Railroad, with a particular focus on Harriet Tubman’s various journeys north. During her residency, Rodriguez will build and source a collection of lanterns, much like the ones Tubman used. This site-responsive exhibition extends Rodriguez’s dynamic, research-based practice through new making techniques and regional collaborations.

The exhibition is on view from September 11 through October 17, with an opening reception from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, September 11. SPACES is open from noon to 5 pm, Wednesday through Saturday.
