Photo Poets: Garvey Cline

Curator’s note:

Cline’s photography takes us into the fearlessness, and determination to make communal space, building community around experimentation and exploration. These students are getting to know their city in a magical way, exploring remnants of the city’s former architecture, and documenting their perspective full of wonder and curiosity.

Artist Bio:

My name is Garvey Cline. I am majoring in architecture at Savannah College of Art & Design (Georgia), with a passion for architectural photography. I hope to use my studies to have a career in architectural design, creating third spaces where youth feel welcome and able to take up space, along with improving public infrastructure.Artist Statement:

I enjoy capturing urban exploration while also capturing the past uses and lives the dilapidated buildings had. I find it incredibly compelling, the juxtaposition of a building which may have been bustling with workers or church goers in the 60s broken down and abandoned while being repurposed for art and exploration by young people today.

Aja: What draws you to photography?

Garvey: A major reason I enjoy photography is it helps inspire me when it comes to my architecture designs. Going into old cathedrals, abandoned train depots and factories, gives me a chance to see behind a polished building and look at what makes the structure stand. Being able to capture that and give story to these kinds of places feels like pulling back the curtain and sharing something beautiful.

Aja: How do you interpret the title, “Photo Poet?”

Garvey: I interpreted the title as someone who tries to draw a story or capture an interpretable narrative in a photo.
