Lee Waldman: Transitions, at ArtiCle

Article Gallery is pleased to present the multifaceted work of artist Lee Waldman, the recipient of the 2024 Tilkkanen Painting Prize. Lee has been making art for most of his life, and his Cleveland Heights home is a total studio environment, bursting with his paintings, drawings and wood sculpture. Lee’s drawing table, easels, and well-worn armchair are the first things a visitor encounters upon entering the living room. Lee’s work is a journey of Self, discovering mythic archetypes and organic forms as he explores a tactile world of line, shape, color, and texture.
Waldman masters a variety of mediums: graphite pencil, charcoal powder and turpentine, oil paint and natural woods. His signature linework builds a scaffold for what he terms “three-dimensional shadow play”—a subliminal world of push-pull biological forms and whimsical mutations.
Included in the show are over 25 of his over 300 daily drawings completed during the Covid lockdown of 2020-2021. A wide variety of abstract, landscape, and figurative musings, they are a daybook of humor, grief, and an unknown future during those dark years.
Waldman’s early-career wood sculptures reveal the evolution of his haptic touch. Their rich grains, lush curves, and deep finishes transcend ordinary lathework craft.
They share the same grasp of significant form evident in his later graphic and painting work. The show includes several favorite pieces to complement his paintings and drawings.
Lee Waldman: Transitions opens with an artist reception from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on Friday, September 4, and continues through the month, by appointment at Article Gallery.
