In(k)spire: Zygote’s New Printmaking Workshop Scholarship

Many nonprofits are facing uncertainty in the current political climate and Zygote Press, as an Ohio-based arts nonprofit, is no different. But while the expectation may be a reduction in services and programs, our plan is to fight. With our In(k)spire Scholarship, we are ramping up our 29-year legacy of serving the Cleveland arts community.

In January of this year, Zygote introduced a new scholarship program for Northeast Ohio artists whose budgets may prevent them from being able to sign up for a workshop. In(k)spire was conceived in the fall of 2024, after Zygote’s board and team completed training with ThirdSpace Action Lab to identify ways for our organization to break down barriers and make a deeper investment in our community of artists. As we watched the national conversation with increasing concern, our commitment to breaking down financial barriers so that wealth does not impact access to education became ever more steadfast.

In November, our members came together to raise money for free ArtsPass memberships to Zygote’s studio, resulting in eighteen free memberships being allocated for 2025. By early December, we had a start-up fund of $5,000 from a donor who believes in our work and wants to support the expansion of programs that allow free or low-cost access to our studio and workshops. This fund will provide two need-based scholarships to each of our workshops in 2025. Eight scholarships were awarded before February 1 and more scholarships will be awarded for the summer semester of classes!
