Cynthia Penter: In Motion and (re) Pose: A Retrospective
Noted Cleveland filmmaker, photographer, and educator Cindy Penter shares dance photos, loops and videos from 40 years of exploration of humans in motion, the result of her collaborations with many dance ensembles in Northeast Ohio. The show includes work by several other photographers selected by Penter who also shoot dancers.

Pieces of Knowing
In Pieces of Knowing, ten area artists show work in diverse mediums, including clay, metal, collage, and paint, that draws on the unexpected, the improvisational and the intuitive rather than extensive planning. The works ask viewers to see the makers’ process as nonlinear, a conversation between material and creator, thought and instinct, past and present. Artists in the show include Clare Murray Adams, Kelly Dietrick, Patty Flauto, Marti Higgins, John T. Howitt, Mary Platz Hughes, Jennifer Price, Mindy Tousley, Lisa Kenion, and Robert Brinsley.

Chasing Carrots: Helena Sarah Richardson
Artist Helena Richardson brings a touch of whimsy to her works when she says, “come for the carrots, stay for the string.” She works in fibers such as chenille, cotton, linen, rayon, and wool, allowing other items to emerge from the fabrics “layering decisions and dreams,” she says. She’s spent time at Praxis Fiber Workshop, experimenting with creative ways to mix different strings and fabrics.

The land is a being who remembers everything
Bringing together two narratives that converge in Oberlin: one is its history as an abolitionist stop on the Underground Railroad, the other its roots as a location of indigenous sovereignty. The artworks share a story about the porousness of
“American” identity connected to the land and the water rather than to political identities or imposed borders. The show is comprised of works primarily from the Allen’s permanent collection covering three centuries, as well as a newly
commissioned piece by Mercedes Dorame, a Tongva artist (a southern California indigenous peoples), addressing how waterways connect people to their histories.

Faye Wei Wei: Draw in your head and sleep the whole way home
Jody Pinto has spent five decades making sculpture, ephemeral outdoor installations, landscape interventions, public art and drawings. She founded Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) in 1973, linking feminist activism with her commitment to public space, while working in a male-dominated environment. In “body/land” she connects bodily and
environmental forms and systems: veins and irrigation, hair and plant growth, injury and healing. This show covers work from her early excavations and outdoor constructions to her work in rape crisis activism, and her more recent landscape and urban design projects.

Brent Kee Young: The Matrix Series
Emily Culver: Holotyped
These two shows provide a striking contrast in materiality. Brent Kee Young has had a long career in making glass sculptures, creating works so airy and delicate in appearance you’re almost afraid to breathe in their
vicinity. He retired in 2014 after teaching for 42 years at the Cleveland Institute of Art but continues to make his complex works which have been exhibited globally. His Matrix Series is an intricate network of interconnected, flame-constructed glass rods, worked into large weblike forms that integrate light as an element. Emily Culver, on the other hand,
works in metal, and you’d never have to worry about the fragility of her work. A couple of generations younger than Young, she joins him in exploring the interconnection of forms, as she contemplates how bodies are classified as “normal,” basing her work on reimagining forms derived from anatomy and medical instruments.

Project Snapshot
This 18-week course teaches students the fundamentals of black-andwhite film photography, exploring different approaches to photographic storytelling. Amalgamation
This group exhibition features the work of four artists working at the intersection where humanity and technology converge. This exhibition looks at this convergence as a mingling, resulting in weird hybrids, fantastical growths, and machine/human forms. Jonah Jacobs uses upcycled cardboard and household detritus to create coral-like sculptures. Jamie Richey’s work layers photographs and video to explore loneliness and the impact of hyper-connected modern life. Nicolas Romano uses code as his medium showing how the devices we carry around change our relationship to space. And Douglas Becht deconstructs and reconstructs fragments of pop art, nostalgia, and street art to create new takes on popular culture.

Monsieur Periné
A so-called “musical laboratory” run by Colombian musicians Catalina García and Santiago Prieto Sarabia, Monsieur Periné tosses a lot of genres into a pot and mixes them well. Their music includes pop, jazz, swing and Latin American styles including bolero, salsa, cumbia and guaracha, as they discover their own personal ways to explore love, freedom and the
world around them. Formed in 2007, they’re considered one of their country’s most important bands. This performance is their Cleveland debut.

The Surrealist Impulse
The Surrealist Impulse inaugurates the Akron Art Museum’s new Susie and Tony Paparella Galleries on the second floor of its post office building, a space which once served as a special exhibitions space for traveling shows by artists such as Lee Krasner, Weegee and Hans Hoffman. It emphasizes the connection between two influential early 1900s art movements,
Dada and Surrealism, along related works by Art Brut (untrained) creators of the same era. Dada exploded existing cultural tropes it believed were meaningless in the aftermath of World War I, while Surrealism, which continues to influence visual art, theater, film, and literature to this day, retreated into dreams and the interior of the mind.

Leenalchi
South Korean alternative pop group Leenalchi offers something different from the radio-ready K=Pop we’ve become familiar with. Rooted in Korean folk music, the ensemble incorporates electronic synths, groove-heavy bass lines and pansori-style singing (a traditional form of storytelling talk/singing involving stylized gestures as well) and has been compared to Talking Heads. It features two bassists, drums, keyboards and three singers, but no guitar. Founder/bassist Young Gyu Jang is known for his horror film soundtracks. It’s part of the museum’s programming around its new exhibit The Ten Kings of Hell: The Afterlife in Medieval Korea.

Laurence Channing: Then and Now
Channing is known for his pastels, oils, and black-and-white charcoals, the latter often photographic in their detail. Most depict homely scenes of industrial working-class Cleveland, although his repertoire includes hazier, more idyllic scenes along the lakeshore and in the rural outskirts, and even a few of people, but that’s not what he’s best known for. Bonfoey, which represents the artist, is mounting a comprehensive look at his career of more than 40 years.
