Mindy Tousley: Counterpoise—Imbalance and Equilibrium in Abstraction
Tousley is widely known as a gallerist who had Dead Horse Gallery in the ’90s, ran Akron’s Harris Stanton Gallery and is now executive director of Artists Archives of the Western Reserve. But like many passion-drive gallerists, she’s also an artist who has worked in a variety of mediums. At Article on Waterloo, she’ll be showing her abstract print and collage work.

Self-dubbed “fiberart sculptor” Char Norman draws on the forest—for inspiration, ideas and the materials with which she builds her art. She views nature as a sacred space that speaks to the interconnectedness of life. Using items she’s gathered and transformed via her processes of weaving, coiling and papermaking, she creates the iconic pod shapes which comprise much of her output, representing wombs and shrouds that speak to abuse, nurture, mourning and reverence for nature.

Transforming Narratives of Identity
This show focuses pushing back on the current challenges people face to their own identity, whatever it is, at a time when identities of race, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation are being erased to conform to a “standard” set by those in power. The artists in the show, who work in paper, print and bookmaking, proudly announce via their work who they identity as. The group show includes three NEA grant recipient artists: Miguel Aragón, Diedrick Brackens and Zoë Charlton. Other artists in the show are Dustin Brinkman, Danqi Cai, Yangbin Park, Joseph Lappie, Nicole Malcolm, Liz Maugans, Roberto Torres Mata, and Erin Wohletz.

Rose Iron Works and Art Deco
In the early 20th century, a Hungarian immigrant, blacksmith Martin Rose, established Rose Iron Works in Cleveland to manufacture decorative metalwork. The company rose to prominence in the 1920s and 30s at the same time as the distinctive style of design known as art deco replaced the earlier more ornate Art Nouveau. Rose Irons Works continues to operate on Cleveland’s near east side. This exhibit looks at its history and focuses on Rose’s 1930s commissions.

Ordinary Miracles: Robert Glenn Ketchum’s Photographs of Cuyahoga Valley National Park
If noted nature photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum’s photos seem at little postcard-like, it’s not an accident. Though his scenes may strike some as too pretty, there’s a reason: the 77-year-old artist/environmental activist is dedicated to making the case for protecting nature’s unparalleled beauty, something under attack now more than ever. From 1986–88, Ketchum trained his camera on what was then the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, deliberately depicting its landscape as generic and universal, what he calls “an icon of a landscape.” This is the museum’s first solo show of his work since the late ’80s.

Assembly’s quarterly get togethers provide updates on what’s going on as far as artist funding, public policy impacting the arts and what’s going on with area arts organizations. It’s also a great opportunity for people with a connection to the arts—creatives, creative businesses, arts organization administrators, project managers, and policymakers, as well as those interested in supporting the arts and artists—to meet, mingle and share ideas.

Cuatlacultl, a recipient of the Sculpture Center’s Revealed Emerging Artist Series, draws on his own experience as a diasporic individual and an indigenous Mexican whose community faced “forced displacement,” to explore how indigenous people are marginalized and how they can protect and preserve their history and culture. His work comprises an ongoing series of short experimental videos and multimedia installations that funnel his community’s 500+-year history. He is currently based in Virginia.

Waterloo Arts Fest
This festival has a strong neighborhood slant, drawing on the large number of artists and musicians who live and work in the North Collinwood community to be the backbone of the one-day event. That slant is emphasized by the participation of the ten galleries and multiple music venues on the street. But the nearly 100 artists and more than 40 local music acts on the seven stages also come from other parts of the city and Northeast Ohio. Still, this arts fest primarily showcases talent found in our own backyard. Expect lots of demos and hands-on activities as well, and plenty of local food—both food trucks and stands.

Alfred McMoore: All This Luck in My Head
McMoore (1950-2009) was an Akron resident who used his artwork to cope with his schizophrenia. He drew daily in pencil, depicting the people he encountered, on scrolls of paper that could be as long as 50 feet, limiting his opportunities to display them. According to the band, he inspired the name of Akron’s Black Keys in the voicemails he left telling people “your black key is taking too long,” meaning that something wasn’t quite right.

Everlasting Plastics
It was quite a coup when former SPACES gallery director Tizziana Baldenebro and moCa curator Lauren Leving were chosen to curate the US Pavilion at 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. Their exhibition, Everlasting Plastics, focused on “the ways [plastics] both shape and erode contemporary ecologies, economies, and the built environment,” as interpreted by five diverse artists from Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan and Cleveland (sculptor/conceptual artist Lauren Yeager.) Obviously not many Clevelanders could make the trip to Venice to see the show although some may have made it to Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art. If you missed even THAT showing, it’s now coming home to SPACES Gallery for a nearly four-month run.

Dress to IMPRESS
Last year the Morgan came up with a fun new fashion fundraiser, with paper outfits and other wearable art designed and fabricated by a group of local creators. It was a hit so they’re doing it again, with the theme “Reduce. Redact. Reuse. Recycle,” with all creators crafting their outfits from recycled materials to reflect the current zeitgeist in work, politics, the environment and personal life. The artists have been working in a series of open work sessions where interested members of the public could see the works in progress, but if you missed those, you surely won’t want to miss this evening when they hit the runway. It will also feature munchies, a cash bar, a DJ providing music for dancing, a photo booth, raffles, a silent auction and artworks for sale. There’ll be prizes for best-dressed attendees, so don’t let the artists be the only ones who shine!

Boulez 100: Celebrating Pierre Boulez Centenary
French composer conductor Pierre Boulez (1925-2019) was a major figure in 20th-century avant-garde music. He also had strong ties to Cleveland, serving as The Cleveland Orchestra’s official guest conductor and principal guest conductor from 1967-1972, and guest conducting and leading many programs at Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center outside of those years, with appearances spanning 1965-2010. The Orchestra celebrated him on his 80th, 85th and 90th birthdays, and is now celebrating his centenary with a scholarly conference at Cleveland State University and programs such as this one, featuring an evening of his music performed by an ensemble of musicians from across the country, led by CSU professor Dr. Andrew Rindfleisch.
