Art Comes Home: Two Homecoming Shows at Maria Neil Art Project

This fall and winter, Maria Neil Art Project in the Waterloo Arts District is welcoming back two artists we’ve loved showing over the years.

Amy Casey opens our twelfth season in September, marking her first Cleveland show in more than ten years. Her precarious, teetering cityscapes, drawn from real buildings she photographs around her Tremont neighborhood, have earned her a national following, and a long list of honors including the Cleveland Arts Prize and three Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards. Her paintings ask us to think about what holds a community together when everything feels like it might slide off the edge. As Amy has said, her work has long treated the world as insecure, and the instinct to keep building anyway is what keeps her at the easel. The last time Cleveland audiences got to see new work from her in person was right here at Maria Neil Art Project, back in 2014. This September, she’s finally home again.

Just in time to brighten up the gloomy days of Cleveland winters, Libby Chaney opens in December. She’s back at the gallery where she staged Seasons in 2015, a spectacular, immersive fabric installation that wrapped the whole space in the cycles of the natural world. Libby works cloth the way a painter works pigment, blending raw edges and layered patterns into pieces that land somewhere between quilt, collage, and drawing. Her new series builds meditative surfaces from basic shapes, and she describes the experience of showing them a bit like lying in a meadow with a friend, watching clouds and swapping stories about what you each see in them. A decade later, she’s bringing that spirit, and a new body of work, back to the neighborhood that first gave Seasons its stage.
