Akron Black Artists Guild: Archiving Art History & Culture, Sharing the Lives of Artists

As the sun rises and determines the day, so it sets beyond the horizon to embrace the night. We rely on this systematic collection of time, and proceed without pause to live. We live to be counted, we live to encourage, we live to be remembered. It is essential as we live to hold a place in our timelines to write and record the history we’re making right now.

The Akron Black Artist Guild (ABAG) amplifies the Black voice and the lives of artists. Preserving history and culture, we’re tasked with recording and archiving their stories for the next generation of artists and the community to glean from. ABAG desires this history to be accessible to all by providing materials and resources beyond textbooks and the classroom.
In 2025, we declare the “Year of the Artists!” We our producing mini-documentaries and interviews sharing the stories of Black artists practicing various art disciplines. These artists are not just creating art, but making positive changes in their communities and working through these daunting times, declaring we must press forward. Their resilience is a source of inspiration and hope for us all.
Before the sun goes down, we hope to capture the essence of the Black experience through the lens of art, archiving robust timelines enriched in heritage and the tenacity to live. This is a responsibility we all share, and a commitment we must all make.
