Artists Archives of the Western Reserve
The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve is pleased to open its fall/winter exhibition season with Visual Emotions, The Way I Remember You, the inaugural show of Archived Artist Augusto C. Bordelois. A native of Havana, Cuba, Bordelois paints in a Magical Realist style which weaves together rich psychological symbolism with lush sensual imagery. His fantastical narratives speak to the nature of human relationships, passion and romantic love.
In conjunction with this exhibition, and as part of the ArtBites series of Collecting Art talks, the AAWR will present “Cuba: The Land, the People, the Arts—60 years after Castro’s Revolution” with Irene Shaland on Saturday, November 18.
January 26 brings a second inaugural show, Core Functions, which will feature the prints and paintings of Archived Artist Marvin Jones (1940 – 2005) and new functional ceramic work of Archived Artist Bette Drake.
Marvin Jones was a Professor Emeritus at Cleveland State University, where he taught Studio Art for over 25 years. His style was heavily influenced by outsider art as well as Inuit and Mexican folk art. It was Jones’ impressive personal collection of these art forms that inspired our February program, “Collecting First People’s Art” with Paul Biber, the former owner of First Peoples in the Powerhouse Gallery, previously located on the West Bank of the Flats.
Drake received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and her MFA from Tulane University. She has taught at multiple institutions including the Cincinnati Art Academy, Thomas More College and Cuyahoga Community College, where she was an associate professor of art.
March marks the return of the AAWR’s Annual Members’ Exhibition. For the second consecutive year, the show will be “all-inclusive,” featuring one piece under 24 inches from each member hung salon-style in the main gallery. This unique format celebrates the diverse and dynamic work of AAWR’s Member Artists.
Other programming for the season will include “Improves with Age: Collecting Fine Wine” with wine appraiser Cris Drugan and wine tasting courtesy of Vintage Wine Distributor, to be held on February 10. On March 24, the AAWR will host “Fledgling Collector” with Susan Covey and Kathy Cameron, a program designed to foster and guide those beginning an original art collection with limited funds.
