Meet Me in The Square
In the fall of 2002, a group of Clevelanders stood together in our city’s center and thought about what it could be: a beautiful, vibrant, and active space that would create a legacy for generations to come. In order to make this vision a reality, LAND studio, in partnership with James Corner Field Operations (JCFO), best known for New York’s High Line, crafted a visionary plan for Public Square. LAND studio and JCFO worked with the Group Plan Commission (GPC) to create true placemaking – equally weighted between physical transformation and ongoing programming that makes Public Square a vibrant hub for Cleveland, day and night, year round. Donley’s, the Cleveland-based construction company, was brought in to execute the reimagined and inviting Public Square.
The previous four quadrants of Public Square have been merged into a single public park. The northern half, a large sloped lawn, includes Overlook Hill and Concert Hill. Well-suited for casual everyday use, this design also creates a natural amphitheater for events like movie nights and concerts. The southern half of the Square is a hardscape plaza that includes a café and seating, a speaker’s terrace, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and a mirrored-fountain water feature. Lush, seasonal landscape creates a soft colorful space that invites people in and encourages them to stay.
Clevelanders: get out and enjoy the magnificent city center that we have all been waiting for. See you on the Square.
