Northeast Ohio explorations in glass at Heights Arts

Heights-Arts-C.BATTISTA_BigElephant2

Refraction: The Influence of Brent Kee Young gathers works by eleven artists who studied under Young’s extraordinary tenure as professor and head of the glass department at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Carrie Battista, Robert Coby, Scott Goss, Earl O. James, Brent Marshall, Shawn Messenger, Michael Mikula, Marc Petrovic, Kari Russell-Pool, Mark Sudduth, and Linda Zmina are working glass artists in northeast Ohio today, all producing remarkable, yet different bodies of work. Heights Arts asked each of them to select works for this exhibition that they feel embody Brent Kee Young’s impact on their own creative and technical development.

Exhibition artist Scott Goss notes, “The strong foundation Brent builds within his students is evident in the many nationally and internationally known glass artists that have graduated from his program over the last 35+ years. His genuineness as a mentor created an environment in the glass department where each student felt respected, by both him and their fellow students.”

Refraction: The Influence of Brent Kee Young  opens with a public reception on June 10, 6-9 p.m. Ekphrastacy: Artists Talk + Poets Respond offers an opportunity to hear both artists and local poets speak about the exhibition works on Thursday, July 7, 7 p.m.
