LIGHT IN DARK: HILARY GENT JUNE 19–SEPTEMBER 5 AT TINNERMAN LOFTS
Hilary Gent: “Light on Dark is a new series of paintings, created with latex and enamel Sherwin-Williams house paint. The meditative nature of water that I experience through Lake Erie conjures my personal connection with the lake’s surface, which I translate through the action of pouring and layering paint onto canvas. I work while the canvas is horizontal, manipulating the paint to interpret the surface of water.
I’m continuing to experiment with how the paint is layered, pouring various hues of black as the initial layer, then adding thick applications of color after it dries. This series of paintings is influenced by reflections of light, such as fireworks, on night waters. They represent glimmers of hope amidst life’s storms, light interrupting dark with its intensity and power.”
Hilary’s openingreception is coordinated with Plein Air at Tinnerman. Northeast Ohio artists, please join us from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, June 19, for a late afternoon plein air day of drawing and painting on the beautiful grounds of Tinnerman Lofts.

THE BLACK KALEIDOSCOPE: LOOKING BEYOND, NOON-6PM SATURDAY, JULY 19 AT YARDS PROJECTS AT WORTHINGTON YARDS
Artist and curator Bobbi Reagins embodies the spirit of the Blaack Arts Showcase, bringing bold artistic energy and storytelling that resonates with themes of identity, history, and resilience. The exhibition will highlight a diverse range of artists whose works challenge, inspire, and uplift, while fostering deeper connections between the artists and the community.
The Black Kaleidoscope: Looking Beyond depicts the abstractness of the Black interior, a term described by Elizabeth Alexander as “a metaphysical space beyond the Black public every day toward power and wild imagination”. This show expands on the Black experience being kaleidoscopic through a satirical and critical lens, disrupting social norms. Across the timeline of revolutionary movements, hidden languages emerged through necessity. This unofficial language presents itself as things we know and love today. It’s an instinctive response to reconceptualize new futures sparked by exploration of self, culture, and truth. This adaptation infinitely calls for storytellers to investigate the complexities and throughlines of each.
The Blaack Arts Showcase is an initiative of School of Stars Inc, an organization dedicated to inspiring unity, change, and hope across generations, disciplines, and diasporas by creating celebratory and educational spaces annually. They are set to program year-round in 2026. Through this event, the Blaack Arts Showcase amplifies the voices of Black artists in NEO while providing opportunities for meaningful engagement with audiences, collectors, and cultural institutions.
In addition to the visual art exhibition, the 2025 Blaack Arts Showcase will include panel discussions on the role of a full-time artist in today’s cultural landscape. Performances, meditation, an open mic, demonstrations, Interactive workshops, community dialogues, and more for free!
