SLEIGH WHAT?
You can always count on E11even2 Gallery at 78th Street Studios to do a holiday-themed show. In the past year, two new artists—Jared Gepperth and George Kocar—have joined co-founders R!ch Cihlar and Billy Nainiger, so, like last year, the focus of their show—Sleigh What?—will be on their own works. The artists all have pop culture/whimsical elements in their work, ranging from Naininger’s and Cihlar’s mixed-media to Kocar’s cartoon-influenced paintings. E11even2’s focus has always been on affordable art, and for this show they’re promising to fill the gallery walls with works all priced at $50. The adjoining shop will be filled with pieces in diverse mediums from $20 to $200, many with Cleveland-oriented themes. Hours vary but they are always open for Third Fridays and other holiday events at 78th Street Studios, and by appointment.

WINTER SHADOW/WINTER LIGHT
A relative newcomer to the local art scene, Pinwheel Gallery in Old Brooklyn is once again planning to pack its walls with seasonal artwork for its Winter Shadow/Winter Light group show. As proprietor Sarah Raban says, “Before the shine of electric lights extended the short days, before technology peered into all places we are curious about, before the ability to call out for help was omnipresent in our pockets … When the days got short and the shadows darker and the forest impassable, the imagination built the creatures and monsters that kept the paths empty and quiet in the winter. In this show we will shine a light on them.” Artists in a variety of mediums will offer their takes on the season: expect to see everything from snowy landscapes to glittering abstracts. It’s a great chance to purchase mostly affordable original art for gift-giving. Please check Pinwheel’s Google listing for hours.

BLACK FRIDAY, SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
(AND LUMINARIA MARKET), AND ARTISTS SUNDAY
More than 60 businesses fill the three floors and Ramp level of 78th Street Studios, and most will be open for these three days, which are important to every retail business, especially the small ones, and even more-so your favorite local artists. Speaking of which, this is a great time to talk to them, especially if you are considering not just whimsical stocking stuffers or last minute nick-nacks, but the gift of art. Let us lay out a scenario: you and your partner visit the galleries now and then on Third Fridays (date night!) all year, and you’ve noticed they pay particular attention to an artist in one of the galleries. This is an absolutely great time to go there, talk to the artist or gallery director, and choose the right work. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm Friday and Saturday, and 11 am to 4 pm Sunday.

WATERLOO ARTS HOLIDAY CO-OP
Waterloo Arts’ Gallery’s annual co-op sale features a wide range of handmade products by local craftspeople and artists, many of whom live in the neighborhood. There’s some fine art such as paintings, but most of what’s offered is highly affordable and perfect for small-gift giving. They typically include things such as soap, toys, small leather items, and edibles such as preserves and honey. Each artist/maker has their own table with multiple items that are replenished over the course of the sale. Artists take turns sitting in the gallery so you may have a chance to talk to someone whose work you like. Open noon to 7 pm Friday through Sunday, with a last-minute shopper happy hour from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday, December 23.

The Cleveland Bazaar, Northeast Ohio’s longest-running indie craft show, brought its talents to Akron two years ago. This year’s event offers three days to shop more than sixty local vendors. The Bazaar’s Akron home—Summit Artspace—is still being remodeled at press time, but all parties are optimistic that work will be complete in time for the Akron Bazaar weekend. But fear not the uncertainty! Contingency plans with alternate locations are in place for the weekend. Watch Cleveland Bazaar, Akron Bazaar, and Summit Artspace social media and websites for the latest updates. But no matter what, you’ll find artists and crafters selling handmade wares in Akron from 5 to 9 pm Friday, and 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

SCREW FACTORY SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
A prelude to its big holiday sale next month, you can get a head start on checking out the artists and entrepreneurs who pack the upper floors of the Lake Erie Building, more commonly known as the Screw Factory, on Small Business Saturday. The building is reenergized with new management, so it’s worth revisiting if you have not been there in a while. And while some artist hives are filled with public-facing galleries with regular business hours for visitors, the Screw Factory houses studios where artists are making work. If you’d like to hang out and chat with an artist or craftsperson about what inspires them or how that piece of metal jewelry and ceramic pot was created, this is an ideal time to do that. Hours are 10 am to 6 pm.

PHIL KLINE’S UNSILENT NIGHT
Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night is a Christmas-adjacent, strolling musical performance that combines December festivity, the need for community and tradition, with an aesthetic that accommo-dates the changing times. New York-based / Cleveland-born artist Andrew Ratcliff has hosted performances in Tremont since 2021, and will again this year. What is this music? Writing for the LA Times, Joe Woodward described it as “a dreamy fruitcake of parts, tranquil even through its anarchy.” But the music is just a starting point. It’s performance art, in which everyone who shows up can be a performer. All you have to do is bring your smartphone and Bluetooth speaker, and join the walk. Gather at 6:30 pm at the Lincoln Park Gazebo. Walk departs at 7 pm sharp.
