Cindy Sherman UnMasked by Abe Frajndlich
Portrait of the Artist exhibition featuring regional artists
Cleveland photographer Abe Franjndlich taught in the art department of the University of Akron
before he moved to New York City, where he was based for decades, and became a prominent portrait
photographer, especially known for his images of people in the arts. He met Cindy Sherman, known
for her disguised self-portraits, in Akron in 1984, and later photographed her in New York. A few
of his other portraits of artists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Yoko Ono are also in this show,
which is accompanied by a group of self-portraits—photos, drawings and paintings—by regional
artists. Both shows were curated by Gallery Director Arnold Tunstall.

Geomantic Impressions: Susan Squires/William Martin Jean
Susan Squires works primarily in encaustic, creating geometric abstractions that draw heavily on
circles and lines to offer reflective works inspired by the natural world, music and spirituality.
For this show, gallerist Chris Richards has paired her with another artist, Will Jean, now in his
late 80s and retired from the Cleveland Institute of Art where Squires graduated more than 40 years
ago. Despite the generational gap, Jean’s works using mediums such as Japanese paper create a
conversation with Squires: he too creates abstract works that prominently feature circles,
suggesting the cyclical nature of things. It’s a luxuriously peaceful show.

Don’t miss the chance to catch this show, which was put together by former SPACES Gallery Director Tizziana Baldenebro and moCa Curator Lauren Leving for the US Pavilion at 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. Their exhibition focused on “the ways [plastics] both shape and erode contemporary ecologies, economies, and the built environment,” as interpreted by five diverse artists from Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan and Cleveland (sculptor/conceptual artist Lauren Yeager). If you didn’t get to Venice or to its subsequent showing at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art, you have no excuse for not seeing it here. SPACES

Featuring work by Chester Hopkins-Bey, Tanya Kaiser, Kole Robinson Brooks, Yasmeen Kwan, Aja Joi Grant, James Negron, Jeanetta Ho, Mario Tripp, Ellis Walker, Falon Walker, McKinley Wiley, Lolita Wilson, and Leah Aki Wood. “In this exhibition, we do not fear fire—we invoke it,” says the show’s statement of its intention. “We trace its edges, feed its hunger, and question its aftermath. We gather to reflect on the fires that shape us: the ones we tend, the ones we extinguish, the ones we cannot control. Artists, visionaries, storytellers—consider fire. June Leaf: Shooting from the Heart
Chicago-born artist June Leaf, who died last year at the age of 94, split her adult life between New York City and Nova Scotia, two very different environments that she wove together in her drawings, paintings and sculptures, which mostly featured her distinctive vocabulary of almost whimsical figures that emitted a sense of constant movement. This show at Oberlin’s Allen Museum, arranged thematically rather than chronologically, is the most comprehensive look at her work in
more than three decades and the first to cover her whole 75-year career.
