The Gallery at Lakeland Presents from WOMAN XVI…, 13th May Show, & Big Ass Art Show

Azalea On Her Way To The Parade, Betty Skufca.

The Gallery at Lakeland Community College presents an exhibition and artist reception for Celebrate Women’s History Month—from WOMAN XVI… created by women, for women and about women. What started out as a small presentation by local and regional artists in 2008 has grown impressively to a sizable exhibition that includes artworks from artists in Ohio and across the country. A virtual guided tour of the exhibition, led by curator and Lakeland Gallery Director Mary Urbas, can be viewed at

This year my featured artist is Betty Skufca, who passed away at 93 years young. Betty was my SHE-RO and inspiration, as she painted every day until she died. I wanted to pay homage to her talent and sensitivities as a visual artist and poet. Betty and her work impacted artists in Northeast Ohio and beyond. She called her technique “Dot-alism.” I selected artworks to create a mini retrospective of Betty’s oil paintings on canvas and Plexiglass, spanning easily sixty years. This collection will also include her last painting. The first inner gallery space as you walk into the interior of The Gallery will be dedicated to her art.

From WOMAN XVI… is scheduled from February 12 through March 31, with an artist reception from 3:30 to 5pm on Sunday, March 26. Thirty-five artists will be exhibiting works representing a diverse variety of media and visual interpretations created in oil, acrylic, drawing, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, assemblage, jewelry and mixed media.

CALL FOR ARTISTS: online submissions for the 13th May Show. There is a two-stage jury process: round one will be juried from digital entries and round two juried from actual artworks.

The Gallery at Lakeland invites artists to submit artworks for consideration to be included in the 13th May Show at Lakeland Juried Art Exhibition running May 18 to July 14. Cash awards include the Best in Show prize of $1500. Visit for details.

The Big Ass Art Show featuresfour venues and four celebratory receptions in July. This is an idea that I have been contemplating for years—an exhibition to feature large works by regional artists. I convinced the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, Valley Art Center and BAYarts to collaborate with me to create a multi-city event. Stay tuned for more details.
