Constant as the Sun, the third installment in MOCA’s series of group shows featuring artists with a connection to cities in the western Great Lakes region, features installations by Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Detroit artists who address issues of decay and renewal in the Rust Belt. But it will most likely long be remembered for its wall of 400 self-submitted portraits of Cuyahoga County artists organized by Zygote Press co-founder Liz Maugans as part of her just-germinating project to catalyze relationships that will give artists a larger voice in the community and generate more recognition and support for the talent in the region.

Fiber artist Jessica Pinsky hasn’t let her role as the founder and executive director of Praxis Fiber Workshop in Waterloo interfere with her own artistic practice. She follows up a recent show at Hedge Gallery with this exhibition in which she explores ideas about equal parts and balance, creating works with pieces that appear dissimilar but are equal in many ways. She works with different types of fibers, taking advantage of the varying ways in which they react to hand spinning.

From Rags to Riches: American Photography in the Depression

Drawing on its own extensive collection, which was launched during the Depression, CMA has put together this look at an era that produced a deluge of iconic images of the hard times Americans had fallen on. The legendary photographers that emerged — Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein — were documentarians, giving an intimate glimpse into the Depression’s impact. But it was also an era when photographer was infiltrating advertising and when photographers such as Imogene Cunningham, Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams produced timeless images of the natural world, and those three strands are all accounted for here.

The Akron Art Museum dug into its own collection for Micro/Macro, featuring work by two women photographers a generation apart whose subject matter was the surface of the Earth. Jeannette Klute was a pioneer in color photography, doing color photography research for Eastman Kodak in the 1940s, delving into its special ability to color and form. Bridges was born at the end of the 1940s and she flips the script. Instead of looking ahead to color, she looks back to black and white, capturing Earth’s contours in monochrome from a low-flying airplane.

Dan Tranberg: Final Works

When Cleveland artist/writer/educator/arts advocate Dan Tranberg died of cancer in May at the way-too-young age of 53, his loss left the local arts community reeling from the loss of his large, influential presence. But he left behind a large body of work, including new work created while he was in the hospital in his final days. His later paintings featured elegant geometric abstractions that explored color and form in a manner that was both tasteful and bold. These works will go on view at the Bonfoey Gallery, in what is sure to be one of the major shows of the fall season.
