Moment: Momentum at BAYarts

Artist Karen Jewell-Kett will bring her show Moment:Momentum to the BAYarts Sullivan Family Gallery this June. As a member of the group BAYarts Sunday Painters, Jewell-Kett can often be found navigating the world of plein air painting throughout the BAYarts campus. While Moment:Momentum will primarily consist of work completed in her Screw Factory studio, Jewell-Kett brings the same level of craft, commitment, and sense of immediacy to all her painting. Her career as a graphic designer is reflected in her use of color and form across multiple mediums.
Moment:Momentum explores life and the way it moves—always pulling us forward. No matter how we try to hold on, we often feel stuck in the place between what we are now and what we are becoming. According to Jewell-Kett, a recent landmark birthday shifted her to this “in-between” space. She wanted to grasp onto the past and not accept the inevitable changes life brings. Seeing a video of a friend’s son jumping into a pool helped to shift her thinking and lay the groundwork for the piece Leap. Jewell-Kett shared that as she worked on the painting, she came to realize the positive aspects of losing the ground beneath her feet. With change, she said, there can be joyous moments beyond fear which can give us the momentum to move forward if we are open to possibilities.
The paintings in Moment:Momentum will investigate transformative possibility by using both realistic and abstract imagery to capture how time, emotion, and memories shape our experiences.
