ARTneo to Host Community Discussion on Visual Art in Northeast Ohio

On and Off the Wall” will explore the growth and impact of the visual arts since 2000.

On Saturday, September 13, ARTneo, in partnership with CAN Journal, The City Club of Cleveland and The Cleveland Public Library will present a half day community discussion about the visual arts in Northeast Ohio since 2000. Participants will have an opportunity to listen, talk, and tour portions of the Cleveland Public Library’s extensive regional art holdings, including a special exhibit of contemporary regional art.

Designed to codify, document and celebrate the tremendous energy and changes in the local visual arts scene in the decade, this event is a follow-up to the Cleveland Artists Foundation six-part community discussion in 2000 reviewing the first 100 years of this region’s visual arts. Since then, institutions have expanded, galleries have proliferated, arts districts have developed on the east side, west side, north side and downtown. Art exists on the wall, off the wall, on the tube, on the screen, on tables, ceilings, and in the open spaces. This day is to help understand what is going on and how the visual arts contribute to the new energy in Cleveland. It is the first in a series of ongoing programs on this topic.

Kathleen Cerveny, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Director of Arts Initiatives at the Cleveland Foundation and a former working artist, will deliver the keynote address. Two sessions are scheduled and include “Street-Smart Studios: Laboratories for Ideas and Concepts”; andConcepts and Issues Facing Local Artists, Collectors And Art Lovers Today.” Featured panelists, speakers and moderators include Pam Eyerdam (Cleveland Public Library), John Farina (ARTneo, Maria Neil Art Project), Michael Gill (CAN Journal), James Gibans (ARTneo), Robert Maschke (Robert Maschke Architects), Liz Maugans (Zygote Press), Dan Moulthrop (City Club of Cleveland), Barbara Robinson (arts advocate), Tom Schorgl (Community Partnership for Arts & Culture), and William C. Tregoning (Tregoning & Co.).

“On and Off the Wall” is organized by ARTneo Trustees, Nina Gibans and Sabine Kretzschmar and will be held in the Main Branch of the Cleveland Public Library on Superior Avenue in Downtown Cleveland. The forum is from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm on Saturday, September 13. The forum is free and open to everyone. Further information can be found at www.artneo.org or by calling 216-227-9507.
