How Do We Look? at Waterloo Arts

Waterloo Arts is excited to host the upcoming exhibition How Do We Look? this April and May. Exploring the translation of nature to abstraction, Ohio-based artists Elizabeth A. Emery (Cleveland) and Laura Bidwa (Columbus) will exhibit work which gains inspiration from breathing, looking, and moving outdoors.

While both artists excel at creating abstract paintings, How Do We Look? will showcase two distinctive processes in both creation and inspiration. Emery’s vibrant acrylic and gouache work draws from the structure that arises from the natural chaos of the outside world. Bidwa’s oil and latex paintings beautifully capture the fleeting nature of movement. Together, Emery and Bidwa will fill the walls of Waterloo Arts with wonderful illustrations of the seasons.

Looking further than the gallery walls, Emery and Bidwa also will invite the Cleveland community to attend a guided drawing and painting workshop during the run of the exhibition. Taking advantage of the spring air, the artists will guide participants through the creation of plein air artwork by painting outdoors together. Gaining inspiration from Chicago-based artist Leslie Baum’s Plein Air Project, participants will discuss how the details of an environment might be translated into a painted or drawn composition.

How Do We Look? will be on display at Waterloo Arts from April 4 through May 24. The opening reception will take place on April 4 from 6 to 9 pm, with an artist talk by Emery and Bidwa at 7:30 pm.
