Heights Arts Presents Ungallery and Spotlight: Jeneen Hobby

Heights Arts opens a new pairing of exhibitions on Friday, March 20: Ungallery and Spotlight: Jeneen Hobby. Ungallery, a group show, features artists and mediums rarely seen in traditional galleries. Responding to the arts community’s interest in unexpected spaces like Ingenuity Festival’s warehouses and Lakewood’s Screw Factory, Heights Arts presents work from puppetry and experimental photography to multimedia installations and more. Exhibition Coordinator Heather Patterson says of the exhibition, “I hope that Ungallery will reach audiences who may not have considered stepping into Heights Arts before. I’m witnessing a really dynamic Cleveland Arts scene right now and am excited to feature pieces that will speak to the wealth of different expressions in our region. I’m also delighted to spotlight Jeneen Hobby. We’ve featured her incredible photography in our Store for many years, but this allows us to showcase a larger body of work so audiences can interact with her work in a deeper way.”

Ungallery includes interdisciplinary artist Jordan Alexander Wood, who likes to play with themes of decay, psyche, isolation, cooperation, and remembrance. Leigh Brooklyn, a welder, mason, and sculptor, will showcase Gurlz Grenade and Love Bomb, hand-painted inert grenades. Photographer Mary Defer likes to explore memory, landscape, and family history. “I undertake an experimental process of…strategically burning parts of the negatives using an open flame. The gnarled negatives are then rephotographed atop a light table,” says Mary. Designer Marcus Schafer’s discovery of laser cutting led him to develop his mantra—Design | Construct | Inspire—walking the line between functional art and art for art’s sake with his eucalyptus wood pieces. The exhibition will also include master puppet maker Nate Puppets, comic artist Jake Kelly, and artist Leo Covault, who explores gender through the lens of historical fashion and folklore.

Jeneen Hobby’s solo show is a body of work inspired by a two-week expedition to Antarctica. Her photographs capture the radiant blues of ancient ice, the vast Southern Ocean, and the resilient wildlife that inhabits the planet’s last great wilderness. The collection reveals the profound beauty of Antarctica while urging viewers to witness and protect a fragile environment that is essential to the future of life on Earth.
Both exhibitions are on view March 20 through May 17, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, March 20. Ekphrastacy, an accompanying poetry event, takes place at 7 pm on Thursday, April 23, with a Last Look reception from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, May 15.
