Giving Back to Our Community: Words & Art

Talia Hodge, Reshaping the Narrative.

The Akron Black Artist Guild proudly launched a pilot program in November in collaboration with the Summit County Maple Valley Library. This initiative, called the Words & Art Workshops, offers a transformative two-week experience that nurtures well-being and empowers participants from diverse artistic backgrounds to unlock their creativity, enhance self-awareness, and strengthen critical thinking skills through the magic of literature and art-making.

During the program, both after-school learners and adults explored a wide range of artistic media and techniques. The teaching artists carefully crafted the art curriculum, inspired by age-appropriate books selected by the librarians for the workshop.

The program culminated in a vibrant art exhibit and reception that celebrated the participants’ creations. This exhibition serves as a public tribute to our community’s creativity and will be proudly displayed at the Maple Valley Library from November to January. It is open for everyone to enjoy during library hours at 1187 Copley Road, Akron, Ohio 44320.
