Akron Society of Artists Celebrates 95 Years!

A Historic photo from the early days of the Akron Society of Artists.

Since 1931, artists have gathered to learn, create and grow as the Akron Society of Artists (ASA). A show by “fourteen men of Akron” at the Akron Art Institute (now Museum) sparked the group’s creation, and the first studio was on the top floor of the YMCA building.

Now ASA meets on Wednesday nights, September to May, at Mustard Seed Market, on Highland Square in Akron. Programs include critiques, guest presentations and more. On Friday mornings, artists draw and paint from the model and a plein air group meets seasonally. Guests are always welcome.

ASA kicked off the year at the Akron Art Museum with Museum Sketch Night and Mid-Winter Tunes. The Members’ Showcase was next at the Akron Main Library, with a reception during June’s ArtWalk. Chalk-a-Palooza at the Akron Zoo and PorchROKR in Highland Square were additional summer events.

Now here’s what’s happening this fall—at 95, ASA is still going strong!

Past to Present: Akron Society of Artists, including work from emeritus members and ASA’s permanent collection, will be on display from August 24 to December 10 at the University of Mount Union in Alliance.

The Akron History Center will host a display from September 2 to September 30. The Juried Members’ Exhibition at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Akron, will be held from November 21 to January 8, 2027.
