Since 2012, The Galleries at CSU have been located at the center of Cleveland State University’s Arts Campus on 1307 Euclid Avenue. The Arts Campus includes the Middough Building, which houses the Departments of Art and Design and Theatre and Dance, and the Idea Center, home to the School of Film & Media Arts. Notable neighbors and partners include Bonfoey Gallery; Ideastream Public Media; and Playhouse Square Theater District, including the Allen Theatre Mainstage, the Outcalt Theatre and the Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre.

It is in this context of place and partnerships that we need to share some news. The Galleries will be moving from its current location at the Cowell & Hubbard Building by the end of July 2023. We are excited about the opportunity to develop a new permanent home for the Galleries as part of the Campus Master Plan. Playhouse Square will continue to be a vital collaborator. We look forward to continuing to partner with them in support of the Arts and Cleveland’s creative economy.

CSU has assembled a team to determine the best course of action to allow for the continued presence of an academic art gallery on campus to support our mission and to serve our students, faculty, staff and community. The Galleries, Department of Art and Design, College of Arts and Sciences, and CSU Administration are committed to finding both short- and long-term solutions. CSU has great community partners, donors, supporters and alumni that understand the importance of an academic art gallery. We will reach out to these groups for input as we develop a new home.

In the meantime, we will continue our Annual Student Art Show in pop-up locations. A more robust offering of exhibitions will be added as we are able.

The Galleries at CSU will remain strong members and supporters of CAN Journal during this transition. We’ll keep you updated on our progress, timeline and priorities. We appreciate your support and understanding while we relocate and reopen. We look forward to seeing where our journey takes us!
