Mary Urbas, Lakeland Community College’s gallery coordinator, is on a mission to support women artists. For 11 years, she has curated a show, scheduled every spring in The Gallery at Lakeland, specifically dedicated to art pieces created by women. The show, called “Celebrate Women’s History Month – from WOMAN XI…created by women, for women and about women” presents a vast and vibrant display of works drawn from the creative minds of women artists. What started out as a small presentation by local artists has grown impressively to a sizable exhibition that draws submissions from across the country. The show is a staple of the spring gallery schedule and has become both a crowd favorite and an inspiration to the college’s students.

This year, the show is scheduled from Feb. 25 through March 30, with an artist reception slated for Sunday, March 25, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the gallery. Over 40 artists will be exhibiting their works, with the gallery walls and display cases filled with pieces representing a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, drawing, ceramics, photography, textiles, jewelry, enamels, lamp work glass, glass mosaic, sculpture, assemblage and mixed media.

“This year I am excited to welcome back to Cleveland, artist Dona Iona Drozda,” said Mary Urbas. “Donna owned and managed Signet Gallery in the Murray Hill Arts District. She relocated to Virginia where she owns and operates Wren House Studio, a 50-acre tree farm and retreat. Donna will be showing mixed media works from her current series ‘Reclamation, celebrate life and its burgeoning regrowth.’”

As in past years, The Gallery at Lakeland will team up with the Lakeland Women’s Center to honor strong female role models in the community through the Women of Achievement Awards. The awards ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, in Lakeland’s Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center, followed immediately by the from WOMAN XI artist reception in the gallery.

The Women of Achievement Awards, artist reception and gallery are free and open to the public. Special gallery tours can be arranged. Visit lakelandcc.edu/gallery for more information and gallery hours.

Lakeland Community College is located just off the I-90 and Route 306 exit in Kirtland, Ohio.
