Sandy Buffie Designs: Unique Art and Sculpture moves to the Downtown District

Sandy Buffie was a fixture at 78th Street Studios, on the West Side.  But the burgeoning movement in downtown Cleveland called her name.  “The explosion of permanent residents, the new park at Public Square, Heinen’s, Playhouse Square and the rebirth of the Flats just demand more downtown retailers and artists” said Buffie, the award winning designer of unique jewelry and sculpture.

At the newly rebranded 5th Street Arcades, which connects Euclid and Prospect, Buffie found the perfect spot to both operate a working studio and sell from a storefront that boasts over 300 pieces of hand-made jewelry and sculpture.  “I probably get more questions about the bust of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow than any other piece, but it is the jewelry that flies off the shelves” says Buffie, a self-professed creativity junkie.  “My customers are those who are looking for something that isn’t mass produced, isn’t common; and often times I end up designing a piece to meet a specific need or to celebrate a specific event.  I love what I do and I love to the tell the stories behind my art and hear the stories that my customers want to celebrate.”

Buffie designs and creates a wide variety of jewelry, from necklaces and earrings to cuffs, bracelets and brooches.  But what sets her apart are the materials she uses.  “I like roofing copper, wire, scrap metals, found objects; essentially anything I can get my hands on that inspires me to transform from old to new.  My repeat customers like to bring me family heirlooms, photographs from old scrapbooks, an old keepsake from days gone by with the request that I create something for a friend or family member that will bring special meaning.  I love those projects.  But most of what I sell is what I create in my studio in the back room, with my imagination as the only real limitation”.

Buffie also offers instruction that she dubs “Girls Night Out”.  “I run classes that require no prior experience or specials skills.  We talk, we create, we drink a little wine and we eat a little chocolate.  Every one walks away with a piece of art or jewelry that she created and fond memories of a fun night away from the daily stresses of life”.   Classes are available for groups ranging from 4 to 25 and for special events such as bridal showers, promotion parties and birthday celebrations.
